Text Box: New rules for claims
Church Insurance company, EIG, is to introduce limits on claims for the theft of lead from church buildings and cap payouts on any resulting damage.
From policy renewal, the maximum payout will be £5000 for metal theft and a capped payout for any associated damage (such as rainwater entering the building).
These caps will only be met if Smartwater has been used and registered and notices displayed. If it hasn't, the claim will be reduced by 50% up to a maximum payout of £2500 for loss of metal and up to £2500 for any subsequent damage.
The sum insured is the maximum payable for the year. Where churches have improved their security coverage may be doubled to £10,000 per claim, same conditions, for payment of a premium in the region of £500.A survey will be required prior to this additional cover being provided.

The risk to Manchester churches is very great indeed. In 2005 there were 5 claims costing £5,000, in 2008 there have already been more than 85 claims costing £280,000.
What to do
Prevention is the key. The first thing to do is use your supply of Smartwater sent free by EIG and register its use (only 6% of churches are registered nationally at present). Next, follow best practice guidelines sent to you by EIG.
What this could mean to you
In January 2008, thieves stripped sections of the roof of St George's Parish Church, in Tyldesley, Wigan. Although the amount of lead stolen was relatively small, the rain that leaked through the exposed rood beams of the grade-II listed church caused damage totalling more than £35,000. Under the new regulations the parish would have had to meet most of this claim from its reserves.
EIG: supporting our ministry
EIG, like many insurers, is having to place caps like this on policies because of increasing thefts. The caps will enable the company to continue to offer high levels of service to the Church and support this Diocese. If parishes take preventative measures now, it is hoped to reduce claims.
