A conventional ‘post event’ CCTV system which captures images on tape or disk for review after a crime has been committed is only likely to deter the opportunist thief, with more experienced criminals simply concealing their faces with a hood or similar garment. To be truly effective CCTV systems need to be monitored 24 hours a day and ideally incorporate a ‘real time’ audible challenge facility enabling the CCTV operator to issue a verbal challenge to anyone the system identifies on or around the church e.g. “ You in the green hat, you are being watched, please leave the church immediately or the police will be called”.
Duval Security Ltd have developed and tailored an attractive package for churches which is both remotely monitored 24 hours a day, and incorporates an audible challenge facility. Duval offer a 3 year cover plan, including system installation and monitoring, starting from £3678 + VAT, plus annual maintenance at £272 + VAT, for a two camera system incorporating an audible challenge facility and high intensity strobe/spot lights.
Duval offer three types of system: Hard wired cameras with remote signalling over Broadband (Broadband supplied by the church). Hard wired cameras with remote signalling using GSM (radio transmission). Solar powered wire free cameras with remote signalling using GSM.
Additional cameras can be added to systems as identified necessary following a site visit, and the wire free camera option is unique to Duval, who own the rights to this particular product.
The wire free camera is particularly well suited for the protection of remote buildings without mains power or telephone lines. To date Duval have installed 35 of these systems to churches and report that there have been no metal thefts from the roofs of these buildings since the systems have been installed.

External Intruder Alarm Systems
Looking at the external intruder alarm protection, the main disadvantage of such systems is the risk of false alarms, with the potential for birds and small mammals to trigger the system. Hard wired alarms also necessitate the use of intrusive cabling, which can be problematical when dealing with heritage buildings. A wire free technology system, negating the need for a lot of the cabling required for a similar hard wired system, is therefore considered to be the most appropriate solution. However the use of wire free technology is a specialist area and such systems need to be installed and maintained by security companies well versed in the use of this type of technology, and its application within heritage buildings.
SS Systems Ltd, a company based in Rotherham, are experts in the use of wire free alarm technology and are known to Ecclesiastical, having installed a number of wire free fire alarm systems in Cathedral premises. SS Systems have developed a wire free external intruder alarm system for the protection of church roofs, using a combination of active and passive infra beam detector technology. The system is designed to:
· Provide a sensible level of protection of the most vulnerable areas. · Be sufficiently sensitive to offer protection with the minimum of unwanted alarms · Be fully monitored. · On alarm, give a local audible alarm and communicate to an approved alarm receiving centre using either a land line or a GSM (radio) connection. · Be easily reset by non technical persons after an alarm. · Be easily set and unset using proximity fobs. · Be installed in sympathy with the building aesthetics but not at the expense of its efficient operation. · Be installed and commissioned to comply wherever possible with BS4737: Part 1 but not necessarily in every respect in order to minimise costs.
The system should be capable of operating for at least 12 months without the need for technical attention and all battery operated devices have a projected battery life in the order of two years.
The system needs to be maintained at least annually by the installation company.
The installation cost would be in the region of £2,500, however costs will obviously vary for each church, dependent upon the areas to be protected.

Remember Whether an external intruder alarm or remotely monitored CCTV system is installed, it is important church parishioners do not put themselves at unnecessary risk by responding to system activations. We therefore recommend the use of professional key holder response to activations, which can be sourced through Duval, or other similar organisations, at costs in the region of £45 per hour on site.
